SVN ID keywords not expanded in release archives

Reported by: neis Owned by:

Patch: no

Description

While older releases (e.g. 2.8.12) have a useful version header in each file, such as:

Name: wx/msgdlgg.h
Purpose: common header and base class for wxMessageDialog
...
RCS-ID: $Id: msgdlg.h 61872 2009-09-09 22:37:05Z VZ $
...

in the wxWidgets-2.9.4 tarball, that I just downloaded, I only see

RCS-ID: $Id$

Seems like an effect of the packaging method (git?), so maybe we want to drop those ids from the files although I find them useful, personally. Anyway, just "$Id$" is pointless...

  • Keywords release added
  • Milestone 2.9.5 deleted
  • Status changed from new to confirmed
  • Summary changed from SVN-IDs missing in current release to SVN ID keywords not expanded in release archives

It's probably possible to replace "$Id$" with their values from svn when doing git archive but it's not easy. A simpler solution would be to use "export-subst" git attribute but this would insert git SHA-1 hashes instead of revision information in the files and I'm not sure how useful would this be.

I agree that it would be nice to expand "$Id$" in the releases but the benefits of this don't outweigh the convenience of using git archive for making the release for me so I'm afraid this won't be fixed until either somebody else does it or somebody else takes over the release process.

As discussed on the mailing list in July 2013, $Id$ has been removed.
